A search in our library catalog will return a list of items that might look something like this:
This will tell you which library, floor, or collection the book can be found.
The bolded string of letters and numbers (indicated by the red arrow above) is referred to as a call number.
Using a classification system like the Dewey Decimal system, we organize our books into topics, categories, and subjects; and assign each one a call number that helps us (and you!) find them on the shelves.
Each row of shelves has a sign indicating the range of call numbers it holds, and books are marked with an individual call number on their spine.
Just ask--library staff is here to help!
If we don't have a physical copy, we might have a digital version or could arrange for an interlibrary loan.
